Privacy policy

The short version
Self Speed asks for your location because a speedometer cannot work without it. That location is used inside your browser, on your device, to calculate a number on screen. It is never transmitted anywhere. There is no server to send it to.
The site is funded by advertising, and our advertising partner does set cookies. That is a separate matter from your location, and it is covered in full below.
Your location data
When you press Start, the page calls your browser's standard Geolocation API. Your browser asks your permission, and if you grant it, supplies a stream of position readings.
Those readings are used entirely within the page to compute your speed, distance, elapsed time and track. They exist in your device's memory while the page is open. When you close the tab, they are gone.
We do not upload them, log them, store them on any server, or share them with anyone — including our advertising partner. There is no server-side component to this site. Your location is never used for ad targeting.
What is stored on your device
Two things are saved in your browser's local storage, which never leaves your device and which we cannot read:
| What | Why | How to remove |
|---|---|---|
| Your preferred units | So the page opens in km/h or mph as you left it | Clear site data in your browser |
| Trip summaries | The Recent trips list: date, distance, max and average speed | Press Clear in the trips section |
Trip summaries contain no coordinates — only aggregate figures. Your actual route is held in memory during a session for GPX export and is discarded when you close the page.
Advertising
This site displays advertising served by Google AdSense. This is how the site is paid for.
What Google does
Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve and measure ads. This may include:
- Showing ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites
- Measuring whether an ad was seen, clicked, or led to an action
- Limiting how often you see the same advertisement
- Detecting fraudulent clicks
Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet. This is governed by Google's Privacy & Terms, which describes how Google handles data from sites that use its services.
What we receive
Nothing identifying you. We see aggregate reporting only — impression counts, click counts and revenue. We cannot see who you are, and we never pass your location, trips or any device data to Google or anyone else.
Consent
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be shown a consent notice before personalised advertising cookies are set, and you can refuse. Refusing does not restrict your use of the speedometer, which works identically either way.
Opting out
You can opt out of personalised advertising regardless of where you live:
- Google Ads Settings — controls personalisation across Google services
- YourAdChoices — industry-wide opt-out
- Your Online Choices — the European equivalent
- Your browser's own settings can block third-party cookies entirely
Offline caching
The site registers a service worker, which stores a copy of the page files in your browser so it still works without a signal. This caches only the site's own code and images. It stores nothing about you.
Analytics
We use privacy-focused analytics that count page views without cookies and without tracking individuals across sites. We do not use Google Analytics.
Hosting
The site is served as static files through a content delivery network. Like any web host, the provider processes standard request data — IP address, timestamp, user agent — as a necessary part of delivering the page and protecting against abuse. We do not use this for tracking.
Your rights
We hold no personal data about you on any server, so there is nothing for us to disclose, correct or delete on request. Everything this site knows about you lives on your own device, under your control, and can be removed by clearing your browser's site data.
For data held by Google in connection with advertising, use the Google links in the Opting out section above, or contact Google directly.
Children
This site is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone, of any age.
